Pozzolanas: An introduction
Practical Action
The chemical composition of a pozzolana will only provide a rough guide to its reactivity.
Chemical tests tend to indicate the presence of a pozzolanic reaction but not its magnitude.
The best way to determine the reactivity of a pozzolana is to measure the compressive
strength of a mortar cube made with a mixture of lime, sand and the pozzolana to be tested.
A simple test of this type is described in another leaflet in this series on testing and
performance standards of pozzolanas.
